Project Involvement

Over the years since its formation, the club and its members have supported a wide range of conservation and environmental projects, via

  • representation on community or governmental bodies, or

  • through making well-researched advocacy submissions.

The club’s Conservation Coordinator has taken a key role in the latter type of activity since the position was created in 1972 and held by Bon Thompson for a remarkable twenty-five years.

Some recent club representation or liaison roles include:

  • Friends of Morwell National Park: Ken Harris

  • Tarra-Bulga National Park liaison: David Stickney

  • Edward Hunter Heritage Bush Reserve Committee of Management: Martin Rieger

  • Mathison Park Churchill liaison: Ken Harris

  • Friends of Baw Baw National Park: Alix Williams

  • Australian Paper Community Environmental Consultative Committee: Irene Proebsting

  • Hazelwood Environmental Review Committee: David Stickney

  • Strzelecki Ranges ‘Cores and Links’ liaison: Philip Rayment

  • Strzelecki-Alpine Biolink Project: Jay Duncan

  • Mirboo North Preserve our Forests Group liaison: Philip Rayment

Diuris punctata

Club members also take part in a range of monitoring projects for threatened species, such as an annual spring survey of the Purple Diuris Diuris punctata at key sites around Holey Plains State Park. We have supported Mirboo North’s Preserve our Forests group by conducting plant surveys and assisting in nocturnal mammal surveys in high conservation value forest patches under threat of logging activity by VicForests. Other regular projects include bird surveys at Energy Australia’s Morwell wetlands and bird and plant surveys at Uralla Reserve near Trafalgar for Baw Baw Shire.
